Anyone who's taken a college-level economics course knows that a currency that is not backed by assets is the natural progression of money and allows the money supply to change when it has to.

I agree, Ron Paul is an idiot.

As far as I know, Ron Paul is not specifically for a return to the gold standard, but against our current fiat currency regime. There are other solutions that still involved some kind of real asset backing, such as putting up government assets like land and buildings as collateral to the currency. I don't think he wants us rid of fiat currency just for the sake of a return to asset backed currency, but sees fiat currency as one of the mechanisms congress uses to finance ever expanding expenditures and budgetary deficits.

As far as corporations vs government, we will probably not agree. I see both as lumbering entities that are likely to trample people, the difference being corporations are out to make a profit and thus have a stronger incentive to operate efficiently. I do not think that corporations are always more efficient, or that everything under the sun should be privatized. However, I would say we have greater involvement from government than is optimal, and scaling back of size and scope would be good. You must bear in mind that I myself am fiercely individualistic, and have a strong belief in my ability to take care of myself without assistance from others. This is often cited as a fallacy within libertarianism - most people are much less willing to 'go it alone' so to speak.

One final note - you say he exibits a deeply fundamentalist Christian mindset. One of the things I like about Paul though is even though I know he has strong personal faith, it does not seem to affect his policies or stances much (in my opinion). Most of his political beliefs come straight from a traditional interpretation of the constitution. While he does have a pro-life stance (something I think personally is at odds with libertarianism) he does say it is something that should be left up to the states to decide, which is far different from advocating a ban of any sort. The difference between states rights and leaving abortion a federally protected right is pretty wide though, and a tricky subject. Normally I am very opposed to federal mandates for anything of this sort, but I also see what states like South Dakota are trying to do (outright ban abortion) as harmful and undesirable. Should we just let them continue and pay the price of (what I believe) to be bad governance in the form of citizen emigrations, rising poverty, and decreased public welfare caused by coat hanger abortions? These are difficult questions, and I honestly don't know the answer.

yawn Whatever you think, i hope you get your "change" or your "country first". I doubt either will come to pass.

wick, the post has nothing to do with either Obama or McCain. It has nothing to do with advocating for or against either of them, but is solely to vent and collect my thoughts on Ron Paul. I'd rather hear what you have to say directly about him, whether in support of or in opposition to him.

Sigh of relief. Seriously, I think the same people who voted for Bush on face value are the ones who are supporting Paul's utterly WACKED out ideas.

I'm actually using http://itweet.net more. Has a reply feature. But what I'd really like is a Twitterific-esque app. Autoupdates every 15 to 30 minutes and such.
